Bitcoins are digital coins you can send over the internet to anyone on the planet as easily as you send email. They can be sent directly from person to person without the need for an intermediary, like a bank. Transactions are verified by Bitcoin miners and then recorded in a public ledger. These defining aspects of Bitcoin are not in violation of any Islamic teachings. Criticisms of Bitcoin include that it can be used in crime, but so can cash. So can the internet and so can basically anything. Also, securing the Bitcoin network does require a lot of energy but so does securing the traditional banking system. Bitcoins are not physical objects nor is any other software. With the exception of rituals of worship, Halal is the default in Islam. Since I find nothing inherently haram in Bitcoin I am comfortable investing in Bitcoin from a Halal perspective.
